The sequence is set in the long run, where aliens known jointly as Votans have come to World looking for a new house after their solar program was damaged. However, when they achieved World, they found despite a extended discussion with the govt on World, they were not welcome.
Rather than convert away, they started a war with the people as they are identified to make World their new house. During the war, the Votans fall terraformers on the earth and convert the outer lining area of the planet; sizzling the world, starting chasms in the floor and protecting the outer lining area of the earth in the dirt and dirt.
After decades of war, a ceasefire is announced when both factors realize they must concentrate on success on this new almost unfamiliar world. The sequence mostly moves around the personality of Jeb Nolan. Jeb was only ten decades of age when the Votans came and he provided in the army during the war.
With the war now over, he profits to his neighborhood of St Louis to find it's is no more the town he left; it is little more than refugee camping. Determining his solutions are required, Jeb requires up a place as the Primary Lawkeeper in Defiance, so he can secure the town from risky situations between people, aliens, army scavengers and other risky guests who sometimes get into the town
